The load chain has a black-oxide or galvanized finish instead of ordinary polishing. The source describes black-oxide treatment as increasing chain strength and galvanizing as improving appearance and rust resistance. Upper and lower hook blocks can also be powder-coated for a smoother finish.
Hand Chain Hoist Operating Rules:
Overloading is prohibited. Operate the hoist using human effort only. Before use, confirm that components are undamaged, the transmission and load chain are properly lubricated, and no-load operation is normal. Check that the upper and lower hooks are securely attached before lifting.
The load chain must hang vertically with no twisted links. On double-fall models, the lower hook block must not be turned over through the chain. Stand in the same plane as the hand-chain wheel and pull the hand chain to rotate the wheel clockwise to raise the load. Pull in the opposite direction to lower it slowly.
Never work or walk beneath a suspended load. During lifting and lowering, pull the hand chain steadily and gently. Do not jerk it, as this may cause the chain to jump or jam. If the required hand-chain effort exceeds normal levels, stop immediately.
